Duke Energy paying nearly $14 billion stock for Progress Merger of North Carolina power generators would create huge utility

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Duke Energy Corp. agreed to buy Progress Energy Inc. for nearly $14 billion in stock, the company said Monday, bidding to become the largest U.S. utility at a time of steep costs to build nuclear generating plants as well as sluggish growth in the economy.
