Duke hires Cisco Systems for ‘smart-grid’ system
Business Courier of Cincinnati
Duke Energy Corp. has hired Cisco Systems Inc. to develop the utility’s “smart-grid” system.
The three-year agreement is the latest development in Duke Energy’s effort to convert its analog electricity infrastructure into a digital system that reduces energy use and boosts reliability.
The architecture will be based on Internet-protocol standards that will adapt to new communications technology.
“Our goal is to rapidly transform the way electricity is delivered to, and used by, the 11 million people we serve in five states,” says Todd Arnold, senior vice president for smart grid and customer systems at Duke Energy.
In addition, Cisco will work with Duke Energy to develop and install home energy-management devices to help customers control and reduce their electricity consumption.
Financial terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.
Charlotte-based Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) includes Duke Energy Carolinas and the former Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. in Ohio, Union Light, Heat and Power in Kentucky and PSI Energy in Indiana.
Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) is a California-based designer and manufacturer of networking technology.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2001
Ambient Corporation (OTCBB:ABTG) announced today the signing of a Development and Licensing agreement with Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO) in the area of Powerline Telecommunications.
Under the terms of this unique development agreement, Cisco and Ambient will collaborate on development efforts to create a communications access solution that uses the power distribution grid as a means of delivering data communications, and leverages this technology as a vehicle for end to end deployment of network services to end users.
Mark Isaacson CEO of Ambient Corp. said, "Imagine a world where everyone that has electric power can also connect to the Internet and more. Our resulting solution will allow utilities and power companies to do just that, and over existing powerlines!"
Ambient will field test solutions using technology supplied by Cisco Systems and other PLT partners. To date, Ambient has invested $2 million to the project. Under the agreement, allocations of additional amounts are envisioned upon completion of defined development and testing milestones.
Ambient has developed, as well, its own unique technology that facilitates the transfer of Internet and high-speed data through existing powerlines. The same electric wiring that is ordinarily used to transmit electric power to individual homes and businesses can also be used to transmit high-speed data.
