Duke Energy Carolinas has ended a two-year project with one of Japan's largest broadband equipment companies, turning to a small New England company to pilot its broadband service over power lines.

Duke spokesman Tom Shiel declines to say why Duke ended its relationship with Mitsubishi Electric Power Products. Duke started its broadband program with Mitsubishi in 2004. But that project was never able to get beyond a 500-home trial.
